Report: 90 percent of Americans still dream of owning home
New York, NY, United States (AHN) – Despite the mortgage meltdow, credit crisis and recession, about 90 percent of Americans still dream of owning a home, according to a survey released on Wednesday.
The value of owning a roof over one’s head is seen in the 45 percent response of survey respondents who said that Washington should do more to improve the housing market than fhelping people who had been jobless for months.
Another 53 percent favored government direct financial assistance to homeowners who have problems paying their mortgages.
Forty-two percent of the respondents blamed the banks mainly for the housing crash, while 29 percent pointed to regulators. Prior to the housing crisis, respondents to a 2008 survey blamed the regulators (40 percent) more than the lenders (28 percent).
The changing American view toward housing was confirmed by another report that found 43 percent of respondents were willing to forego mortgage tax breaks if it would lower overall tax rates.
Prior to the mortgage crisis, there was a 2-to-1 support for retaining the mortgage deduction.
The pollster said now is the good time to revised the wrong tax policy, which will cost the U.S. government $104.5 billion in 2011. Most of the beneficiaries of the tax breaks are wealthy people in the high tax bracket since they are the ones most like to purchases houses at this time.
